Buying Guide: Choosing the Best Pet Carrier for Southwest Airlines
Airline Size Compliance
Most major airlines, including Southwest, require soft-sided pet carriers that fit under the seat with maximum dimensions close to 18.5″L x 13.5″W x 9.5″H. Always measure your pet’s length, height, and width before purchasing to ensure a proper fit. Size alone isn’t enough as weight limits vary; pets must comfortably fit without cramming.
Expandability Features
Expandable carriers offer extra room for your pet during calm periods such as waiting in the airport or hotel stays. Options include top or side expansions that provide additional space while still complying with in-cabin regulations when folded.
Ventilation and Visibility
Good airflow is critical in a carrier to keep your pet calm and comfortable. Look for carriers with mesh panels on multiple sides for ventilation and to allow pets to see outside, minimizing stress during travel.
Structural Support and Safety
Carriers with built-in frames or reinforced rods maintain shape and prevent sagging, ensuring your pet isn’t cramped or in a collapsing space. Locking zippers and internal safety clips secure pets inside, preventing accidental escapes.
Portability Features
Consider carriers with comfortable padded shoulder straps, handles, or wheels for ease of carrying through airports. Wheels are especially helpful for heavier small pets or longer distances on travel days.
Material and Cleaning
Choose carriers made from durable, washable materials with scratch-resistant mesh for longevity. Removable floor pads or cushions that can be cleaned easily enhance hygiene and pet comfort.
By considering these factors, you can pick a Southwest Airlines-approved pet carrier that ensures your furry friend’s travel is safe, comfortable, and compliant with airline policies.
